South
Dakota hunting with Crooked Creek Outfitters offers
prime mule deer hunts, antelope hunts, and prairie
dog hunts in "almost" Montana. The hunting area
covers over 27,000 acres, some of which borders
Montana. The hunting area is located in Harding
County, South Dakota. We are now opening it to
guided archery hunting.
The
outstanding rugged terrain and range is loaded with
mule deer and antelope and has some big animals. The
outfitters are very experienced and know their South
Dakota hunting land, and in some cases, you will
fill early.
Along
with your mule deer hunting or antelope hunt, you
will stay at a nice ranch/lodge and be served good
home cooked meals and be fully taken care of.
We offer guided archery/firearm hunting for mule deer and
archery/firearm for antelope! Licenses are available
over the counter upon request for archery. You may
buy your license by applying directly to the
Game, Fish & Parks. Firearm deer & antelope, at
this time, remains on a draw basis. At the time that
you receive your license we will schedule your hunt. |

When
you deal with archery, it is difficult to figure an
exact success rate. The opportunity percentage
should be close to 100% with an approximate kill
rate of 60-70%. Our 2007 archery Antelope
success rate was 76.42%. Success rate has been 100% for
firearm deer & antelope.
We
have included archery due to the current draw
system in South Dakota for firearm tags. The archery tags are a
guaranteed application. We have an ample quantity of quality animals on our
property. From this point on the deer and antelope hunts will be
archery as well as rifle hunts.
Most
hunts are staged from blinds set along pre-scouted
trails, gullies, alfalfa fields, waterholes, fences,
and water tanks. We "spot and stalk" if conditions
avail to the situation. Due to the fact that we are
a prairie and "Badland Breaks" landscape with
numerous dry creek bottoms, we do not utilize tree
stands to any extent. In our alfalfa fields, food
plots, hay corrals, and any situation requiring
blinds, we use both man-made and "Double Bull" brand
blinds. |

John & Barbara Hight |
|
Crooked Creek Outfitters offers prime South Dakota
hunting in the northwest part of the state in
Harding County. Owners John Hight and Matt Gilbert
are native to the area, having both been born into
ranching families in Harding County.
Over
the years, John pursued a career in Law Enforcement
and learned the outfitting business from the bottom
up - by working for others.
In
1983, John came back to Pierre, SD, and established
"Cherokee Charters," which catered to fishermen and
big game hunters. In late 2001, John sold that
business and formed Crooked Creek Outfitters along
with Matt Gilbert.
Matt,
in contrast, stayed in Harding County and now runs
the family ranching operation there, along with his
wife, Carmen, daughter Gracy, his dad, and his
brother. Besides golfing and hunting, Matt has
aspirations of one day operating as a Big Game
Outfitter. |
|
With
Matt's present knowledge and John's experience that
day will come, as John has aspirations of one day
again retiring! When that day comes, Crooked Creek
Outfitters, as it does now, will provide you - the
sportsman - the quality, integrity and value you
deserve in your deer and antelope hunts.
Crooked
Creek Outfitters also offers guided
South Dakota pheasant hunting. Based out of Pierre,
South Dakota, the state's capital and geographically
located in the center of the state, we are in prime
pheasant hunting country!
